On the Bubble

With the Patriots heading to Detroit this Saturday for their third preseason game there a few players who are in need of a big game to earn themselves a roster spot. This is one of the deepest teams the Patriots have ever had and spots are limited. Here's a list of a few guys who I think are on the bubble right now and will need to do some serious work to make this team.

1. Brandon Tate, WR: With the new Kickoff Rule in the NFL this season it seems like Brandon Tate's value to this team is way down. He was a top 5 Kick Returner in the NFL last year but this year he may not even be needed as kick returns will be limited. He is a much better Kick Returner then Wide Receiver and because he has been injured most of camp he hasn't been able to improve his Wide Receiver skills. Also the emergence of Taylor Price doesn't help either. Brandon Tate is going to have to have a couple big games, receiving not returning, to secure a spot on this team.

2. Sammy Morris, RB: I'm actually surprised they brought this guy back to begin with. With a plethora of young Runningbacks ahead of him on the Depth chart there is almost no way Morris makes this roster. I thought there was a slight chance if Rookie Shane Vereen could not return from his injury but with his return to camp this week Sammy is no doubt gonna be the odd man out.

3. Jonathan Wilhite, CB: If you asked me last week I would've told you he was safe and that it was Darius Butler who was on the Bubble but after the last game against the Bucs Wilhite is now the Bubble Corner. Butler actually played pretty well vs. the Bucs while Wilhite might not have been terrible but definitely didn't stand out above Butler. Obviously atop the depth chart is Devin McCourty, Leigh Bodden, Kyle Arrington, and Rookie Ras-I Dowling so in reality there is one Cornerback spot left and right now that belongs to Butler.

4. Ron Brace, DT: If I were him I wouldn't rush back from Injury. I have a feeling he might end up on the PUP List or maybe even the IR cause there is no way he makes this 53-man Roster. With all the veteran acquisitions this off season there is no spot for Brace. He would probably be better off going on the IR and coming back fresh in 2012 and compete for a spot against much older and past their prime players like Albert Haynesworth, Gerard Warren and Shaun Ellis.

5. Brandon Meriweather, S: Let's make this clear first, I am not a Meriweather hater. There are a lot of them out there but I'm not one of them. The only reason I put him on this list is because every year Belichick tends to release or at least Trade away a player we wouldn't expect. I wouldn't expect this one to happen but you never know. Meriweather has been a bit overrated the last few years, some how making two Pro Bowls and he is a free agent after this season making him an obvious candidate to be whacked. Last year it was Maroney who they replaced with BenJarvus Green-Ellis and that worked out well. We saw this all the way back in 2003 with Lawyer Milloy who was replaced by Eugene Wilson and that worked out. Belichick has a history of making one shocking move a year and Big Bang Clock is the #1 candidate this season.

Patriots Mock Draft

Round 1 29. Robert Woods, WR, USC - I've been saying Woods will be this pick for weeks. It seems like the Patriots really like this kid. He is a smart receiver coming from a sophisticated offense at USC. Polished route runner with great hands. He's a playmaker and will start from day 1 with the Patriots. Round 2 59. Alex Okafor, DE, Texas - Okafor was one of the best pass rushers in college football last year recording 12.5. He is very athletic and can get after the QB but he is also solid against the run. He even moved inside and played a little DT at Texas. He is expeted to be a left DE in the NFL which would be perfect opposite Chandler Jones. Round 3 91. Tyrann Mathieu, CB/S, LSU - A lot of baggage comes with Mathieu but the Patriots seem very interested. He has met with Patriots multiple times. Belichick has no problem taking pot guys who slip. He is a playmaker on the field. He is versatile and has a swagger the Patriots Defense could use. Round 7 226. Jos...

Patriots Free Agent Targets

Here's my List of the Top 10 Players I would like to see the Patriots Target this Offseason. I am not including their own Free Agents in the List but I will tell you which of their own Players I would Like to see retained. 1. CB Cortland Finnegan, Tennessee - One of the Most Physical Defensive Backs in the NFL. It's no secret the Patriots need help in the secondary and Finnegan would be a Huge Addition. He can shutdown any teams #1 WR. In my opinion he is one of the Best CB in the NFL. 2. WR Marquise Colston, New Orleans - It's clear the Patriots need a Deep Threat at WR to open up this Offense and in my opinion Colston is the Best on the Market. He is also 6'4" and physical. An ideal WR that Tom Brady needs. 3. WR Brandon Lloyd, St. Louis - Probably the Best Fit at WR for the Patriots. Lloyd has had previous success in Josh McDaniels' system. A speedster who will help stretch the field for the Patriots Offense. 4. WR Reggie Wayne, Indianapolis - V...

2013 NFL Draft - Top 10 Sleepers

1. Stedman Bailey, WR, West Virginia - Bailey is a terrific route runner and reads coverages well. He has great hands and makes some amazing catches. He lacks elite speed but is quick, especially off the snap. He is also on the shorter side at 5'10". (Projected 3rd Round Selection) 2. Corey Lemonier, OLB, Auburn - Lemonier is a terrific pass rusher. He needs to add some strength to improve his run defense but he can sure get after the QB. He could play some DE but it likely an OLB at the next level. (Projected 3rd Round Selection) 3. John Simon, DE, Ohio State - Simon has a great work ethic and is a tremendous leader on and off the football field. He is a solid pass rusher and is very versatile, he can lineup at DE or OLB. (Projected 3rd-4th Round Selection) 4. Kiko Alonso, LB, Oregon - Kiko has some red flags but he is an incredible athlete. He can play every LB position, inside or outside. He is excellent in coverage. (Projected 3rd Round Selection) 5. Phillip Thoma...
